it's been actually snowing here the past few days and it's amazing. it's not that much snow, probably an inch at most, but just seeing a layer of snow cover everything and watching snowflakes fall from the sky is just. i missed it so much.

one thing that i've noticed and begun to seriously appreciate upon rereading the watch novels is --

sam and sybil are not in love when they get married.

they like each other, but they aren't in love. and i think this is why sybil seems to be kind of in the background of men at arms and feet of clay, like, sure, she's his wife and he appreciates her and cares for her but he doesn't love her -- yet.

and i think it's the knitting moment at the end of jingo when it happens to him. like that john green quote about how you fall in love slowly and then all at once? i think the moment when he comes home and she's been trying to knit him socks but she's no good at knitting and so it ends up being a scarf instead of socks -- i think that's the "all at once".

and then after jingo, suddenly sybil matters more to him, appears more in his thoughts, he's so proud of her in the fifth elephant for everything she does (she is such a badass in the fifth elephant), and it's the cigar case she gave him that is what he longs for amd desperately needs to hold onto in night watch, the memory of her. she's much more important to him and his perspective in the later watch books, and yes the doylist interpretation is that sir terry developed the relationship more as he grew as a writer because he didn't feel like he was very good at writing romance, but i like the watsonian interpretation --

that sam vimes was not in love with sybil ramkin when he married her, but instead fell madly in love with her along the way.

Regulus is sitting by the Black Lake with James. James’ back is against a large tree, and Regulus’ back is against James’ chest.

The sun has already dipped below the horizon, but Regulus hasn’t realized how cold it’s gotten until a particularly strong gust of wind makes him shiver in James’ arms.

“We should head in.” James says as he’s rubbing his hands up and down Regulus’ arms.

“Not yet.” Regulus pouts and snuggles impossibly closer to James.

“Love, you’re freezing. Plus, we’re already late for dinner.” James tells him.

“Ugh. Fine.” Regulus grumbles as he stands up.

The wind continues to blow, making Regulus’ teeth chatter. James shakes his head as he takes off his scarf and wraps it around Regulus’ neck then uses the ends to pull him in for a kiss. They get lost in each other for a moment before Regulus shivers again and James pulls away with a small chuckle.

“Let’s get you inside, love.” James takes Regulus hand, and they walk back to the castle.

His friends are already eating by the time Regulus makes his way to the Slytherin table.

“You’re late, Black.” Barty snarks as Regulus sits down.

“I didn’t know I had to check in with you, Crouch.” Regulus fires back with no real heat.

“No, but it would’ve been nice to let us know you were switching houses.” Barty smirks at him.

Regulus looks at him confused until Evan nods towards Regulus’ neck. Regulus looks down and his eyes go wide when he sees the bright red Gryffindor scarf wrapped around his neck. 

“Now…” Barty continues. “Whose could that be, I wonder.” He dramatically taps his finger on his chin.

Unfortunately, James chooses this exact moment to enter the Great Hall. Regulus resists the urge to groan as Barty and Evan are barely holding back their amusement.

“Hmmm…” Barty hums. “Potter also happens to be late for dinner. And is suspiciously missing a scarf. Curious.”

“You know what?…” Regulus starts but then realizes he has no defense. “Shut it, Crouch.” He grumbles after a moment.

Barty and Evan’s laughter fills the Great Hall and Regulus drops his head in his hands, knowing his face is probably the same color as the scarf around his neck.

I hope we get a scarf reveal soon. I feel like, with the inevitable “Gabriel was Monarch and Marinette lied about it” reveal, it could be interesting for Adrien to have a “Marinette made this scarf and never told me it wasn’t a gift from my dad” reveal. Because the scarf is an AGGRESSIVELY saner example of Marinette keeping something hidden for the sake of Adrien’s feelings; it could possibly help him see her motivations in a different context and be more forgiving when he realizes the truth about his father
